Age‐related changes in the lipid compositions of rat and human tissues

Abstract: The levels of cholesterol, ubiquinone, dolichol, dolichyl-P, and total phospholipids in human lung, heart, spleen, liver, kidney, pancreas, and adrenal from individuals from one-day-old to 81 years of age were investigated and compared with the corresponding organs from 2 to 300 day-old rats. The amount of cholesterol in human tissues did not change significantly during aging, but the level of this lipid in the rat was moderately elevated in the organs of the oldest animals. In human pancreas and adrenal the u… Show more

“…It is also a powerful anti-oxidant, mainly protecting against lipid peroxidation. The endogenous production of coenzyme Q10 declines after the age of 20, and at the age of 80, only half of endogenous production can be found in the heart [40]. Substantial efforts have been done in numerous studies where supplementation of coenzyme Q10 has been evaluated in different conditions, like multiple sclerosis [41,42] , in Parkinson´s disease [43], in patients with renal injury treated with shockwave lithotripsy [44], in male infertility [45], and in heart disease but with inconsistent results [46][47][48].…”

“…The content of CoQ10 in organs decreases with age ( 4 ). Although CoQ10 can be obtained from foods such as meat and fish, its content in them is very low ( 4 ). Therefore, some nutritionists have considered CoQ10 suitable as a dietary supplement.…”

“…Therefore, an average body CoQ10 content turnover rate was around 4 days and dietary supply becomes essential with impairment in endogenous synthesis. The body content of CoQ10 decreased rapidly after the age of 40 years in humans with reduced biosynthesis (Kalen et al, 1989). The CoQ10 supplementation reversed the reduced circulating CoQ10 concentrations in statin-treated subjects as statin inhibits the pathways involved in both cholesterol and CoQ10 supplementation (Nawarskas, 2005;Fedacko et al, 2013).…”
