Age-specific population centiles for androgen status in men

Abstract: Aim: The age-specific population profiles in men of circulating testosterone and its two bioactive metabolites dihydrotestosterone (DHT) and estradiol (E 2 ) across the adult lifespan and its determinants are not well described. Objective: Our objective was to deduce smoothed age-specific centiles of circulating testosterone, DHT, and E 2 in men using pooled data from population-based studies in three Australian cities from liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry steroid measurements in a single laboratory. De… Show more

“…Exclusions included men more than 70 years of age due to the acknowledged age-related decline in testosterone after this point, (12) significant noncirrhosis lifelimiting illnesses including active cancer, estimated glomerular filtration rate of <30 mL/minute/1.73 m 2 , or severe cardiac failure (New York Heart Association class III or IV). Patients with hepatocellular carcinoma were excluded due to the different natural history and transplant requirements for these patients as compared to cirrhosis alone.…”

“…Total testosterone and free testosterone were significantly lower in men who required hospitalization for major infection during the study period compared with those who did not (total testosterone, 3.60 [IQR, 1.80-12.9] versus 18.8 [IQR, 12.0-26.2] nmol/L; P < 0.001; free testosterone, 71 [IQR, versus 222 [IQR, 141-264] pmol/L; P < 0.001). MELD score and Child-Pugh score were significantly higher in men who suffered major infection (MELD score, 16 [IQR,.5] versus 9 [IQR, [7][8][9][10][11][12]; P < 0.001; Child-Pugh score, 10 [IQR, [8][9][10][11] versus 6 [IQR, [5][6][7][8]; P < 0.001). Hemoglobin, sodium, SHBG, and LH were also lower in those suffering significant infection compared with those who did not (Table 3).…”
