“…Besides increasing N retention and water use efficiency, biochar application may have also better synchronize N release with plant uptake (Mukherjee et al, 2011;Mandal et al, 2016;Esfandbod et al, 2017), consistent with the increase in total N uptake observed in this study. The inorganic N may have enhanced immediate availability of N, whereas the subsequent release of N from biochar could have coincided with peak wheat N demand (Kameyama et al, 2012;Yang et al, 2017).…”

“…Pyrolysis leads to high aromaticity of C, which makes biochar more resilient to degradation (Kuzyakov et al, 2014;Domingues et al, 2017). In addition, biochar has high cation exchange capacity, with diverse acidic and basic functional groups, which helps to adsorb nutrient on its surface and better synchronize their release with plant uptake (Mukherjee et al, 2011;Mandal et al, 2016;Esfandbod et al, 2017). “…Application of biochar to residue can reduce NH 3 volatilisation substantially, because of its adsorption capacity for NH 4 + and NH 3 (Chen et al 2010a). Esfandbod et al (2017) found that application of acidic biochar to residue reduced the cumulative loss of NH 3 and that KCl-extractable NH 4 + -N was also much higher in this treatment compared with control or where alkaline biochars were used. From a practical viewpoint, incorporation of fertiliser NH 4 + into the topsoil layer by tillage will greatly reduce losses by reducing NH 3 concentrations in soil solution near the soil surface (Jones and Haynes 2011).…”
