Ageing draft and trotter horses by their dentition

Abstract: The accuracy of ageing horses by their dentition was assessed by comparing the dental features with the known dates of birth of 212 trotter horses and 189 Belgian draft horses. The horses ranged in age from two to 25 years. In both breeds it was observed that the shedding of the incisors and the appearance of the dental stars were the most reliable features for age determination. In young animals, the dental configuration was similar in both breeds. With increasing age the incisor teeth of draft horses were mo… Show more

“…In mini-Shetlands, stars appear in the central, the middle and the corner incisors at the ages of 4.5, 5.5 and 6.5-7 years, respectively. These results are similar to those of an earlier study in the Belgian Draft horse (Muylle et al, 1997). In donkeys dental stars appear earlier than in any of the above-mentioned horse breeds, i.e.…”

“…The clinical crown length of the incisor teeth in horses has been claimed to decrease with age (McMullan, 1983). However, this statement cannot be confirmed in the mini-Shetland pony, nor in three other horse breeds examined in previous studies (Muylle et al, 1996(Muylle et al, , 1997(Muylle et al, , 1998. The clinical crown length is not reliable for age determination because some old horses and ponies had very short clinical crowns, whereas others had very long clinical crowns.…”

“…Inclusion criteria for cases were: 1) a full clinical history and documentation of examination findings, including detailed oral examination using a dental mirror or oral endoscope; 2) a latero30°dorsal‐lateroventral or latero 45° ventro‐laterodorsal oblique digital radiograph of the affected CT row; 3) gross or histological confirmation of apical infection of the extracted tooth. The dental age (age in years relative to time of intraoral eruption) of each case tooth CT was calculated according to the horse's age and standard eruption times (Muyelle et al . 1997).…”

“…Age estimation was based on history taken from the owner and examination of incisor morphology [18]. Weight and height were determined using a measuring tape (Easy-Measure) b and body condition score was evaluated on a 6-point scale of zero to 5 [19].…”
