Vehicular Ad-hoc Network (VANET) is a modern era of dynamic information distribution among societies. VANET provides an extensive diversity of applications in various domains, such as Intelligent Transport System (ITS) and other road safety applications. VANET supports direct communications between vehicles and infrastructure. These direct communications cause bandwidth problems, high power consumption, and other similar issues. To overcome these challenges, clustering methods have been proposed to limit the communication of vehicles with the infrastructure. In clustering, vehicles are grouped together to formulate a cluster based on certain rules. Every cluster consists of a limited number of vehicles/nodes and a cluster head (CH). However, the significant challenge for clustering is to preserve the stability of clusters. Furthermore, a secure mechanism is required to recognize malicious and compromised nodes to overcome the risk of invalid information sharing. In the proposed approach, we address these challenges using components of trust. A trust-based clustering mechanism allows clusters to determine a trustworthy CH. The novel features incorporated in the proposed algorithm includes trust-based CH selection that comprises of knowledge, reputation, and experience of a node. Also, a backup head is determined by analyzing the trust of every node in a cluster. The major significance of using trust in clustering is the identification of malicious and compromised nodes. The recognition of these nodes helps to eliminate the risk of invalid information. We have also evaluated the proposed mechanism with the existing approaches and the results illustrate that the mechanism is able to provide security and improve the stability by increasing the lifetime of CHs and by decreasing the computation overhead of the CH re-selection. The StabTrust also successfully identifies malicious and compromised vehicles and provides robust security against several potential attacks. Vehicular Ad-hoc Network (VANET) facilities envision future Intelligent Transporting Systems (ITSs) by providing inter-vehicle communication for metrics such as road surveillance, traffic information, and road condition. In recent years, vehicle manufacturers, researchers and academicians have devoted significant attention to vehicular communication technology because of its highly dynamic connectivity and self-organized, decentralized networking characteristics. However, due to VANET's high mobility, dynamic network topology and low communication coverage, dissemination of large data packets (e.g. multimedia content) is challenging. Clustering enhances network performance by maintaining communication link stability, sharing network resources and efficiently using bandwidth among nodes. This paper proposes a mobility-based, multi-hop clustering algorithm, (MBCA) for multimedia content broadcasting over an IEEE 802.11p-LTE-enabled hybrid VANET architecture. The OMNeT++ network simulator and a SUMO traffic generator are used to simulate a network scenario. The simulation results indicate that the proposed clustering algorithm over a hybrid VANET architecture improves the overall network stability and performance, resulting in an overall 20% increased cluster head duration, 20% increased cluster member duration, lower cluster overhead, 15% improved data packet delivery ratio and lower network delay from the referenced schemes [46], [47] and [50] during multimedia content dissemination over VANET.

A New Traffic Congestion Detection and Quantification Method Based on Comprehensive Fuzzy Assessment in VANET

Recently, road traffic congestion is becoming a serious urban phenomenon, leading to massive adverse impacts on the ecology and economy. Therefore, solving this problem has drawn public attention throughout the world. One new promising solution is to take full advantage of vehicular ad hoc networks (VANETs). In this study, we propose a new traffic congestion detection and quantification method based on vehicle clustering and fuzzy assessment in VANET environment. To enhance real-time performance, this method collects traffic information by vehicle clustering. The average speed, road density, and average stop delay are selected as the characteristic parameters for traffic state identification. We use a comprehensive fuzzy assessment based on the three indicators to determine the road congestion condition. Simulation results show that the proposed method can precisely reflect the road condition and is more accurate and stable compared to existing algorithms.
