Agent-Based Modeling: A New Approach for Theory Building in Social Psychology

Abstract: Most social and psychological phenomena occur not as the result of isolated decisions by individuals but rather as the result of repeated interactions between multiple individuals over time. Yet the theory-building and modeling techniques most commonly used in social psychology are less than ideal for understanding such dynamic and interactive processes. This article describes an alternative approach to theory building, agent-based modeling (ABM), which involves simulation of large numbers of autonomous agents… Show more

“…Our logic in every-day actions is constructivist: our beliefs, knowledge, habits, desires are derived from our past experience, learning skills and capacity to adapt. As argued by Smith and Conrey [126], social psychologists should be interested in studying theories through the lens of interactions amongst individuals, instead of expressing them as relationships among variables. Despite success in a wide variety of fields, social simulations are far from obtaining global consensus in the scientific community.…”

“…These include introductory-level books [49], software-specific books for NetLogo [10] and Swarm [50], and books in the fields of social science [51,52] and business management [53]. In addition, several tutorials have been published in different fields that can be useful in learning the scope of ABM [9,[54][55][56].…”

“…The more uncertain the individual is, the wider this interval becomes. This conceptualization is mirrored in social judgment theory (Sherif and Hovland 1961) that assumes that individuals have a latitude of acceptance around their actual attitude that defines a range of positions that are considered acceptable. Also the size of this latitude has been assumed to vary with how confident an individual can be that her own attitude is correct (Insko et al 1966).…”
