Agent‐based modeling to integrate elements from different disciplines for ambitious climate policy

Abstract: Ambitious climate mitigation policies face social and political resistance. One reason is that existing policies insufficiently capture the diversity of relevant insights from the social sciences about potential policy outcomes. We argue that agent-based models can serve as a powerful tool for integration of elements from different disciplines. Having such a common platform will enable a more complete assessment of climate policies, in terms of criteria like effectiveness, equity and public support.

“…78 ABM are a type of computational models used to simulate the behavior of independent factors to extract the total results from the interaction of its constituent components. 79 Adding more variables and related parameters in each loop and in both parts (CM and AR) can create a more accurate model. For instance, affixing more variables and considering the effective variables on the repurchase, the variables affecting social and cultural factors in the customer's motivation category, or considering the variables affecting customer purchase experience in the customer contact points and so on can be investigated in future works.…”

“…Agent-based models (ABMs) are one useful tool for understanding how interacting heterogeneous agents embedded in social, biophysical, technological, and institutional contexts give rise to system-level patterns and behaviors (Savin et al, 2022; Tesfatsion, 2003). For example, ABMs coupled with general equilibrium models that capture macroscale institutions have been used to simulate the energy decisions of boundedly rational individuals (Niamir et al, 2018, 2020).…”

“…Explicitly, SD is focused on breaking the bigger problem into a smaller one—top–down information feedback method (Ding et al, 2018). ABM is focused on identifying the smallest problems to solve the bigger problem (bottom–up method) (Ding et al, 2018; Savin et al, 2022). In fact, ABM does not define the relationships or the global behaviour of a project, but the interaction between agents and environments (Hsu et al, 2016).…”
