“…The most landward and easternmost domain, located between the Uramita Fault Zone (UFZ) and the Romeral Fault System (RFS) (Figure ), is characterized by a basaltic basement with a plateau‐like geochemical signature built between 100 Ma and 88 Ma (Kerr et al, 1997, Sinton et al, ; Villagómez et al, ), on which an island arc was constructed between ~90 Ma and ~80 Ma over the leading edge of the allochthonous Caribbean Plate (Hincapié‐Gómez et al, ; Villagómez et al, ; Zapata et al, ). This oceanic plateau‐arc system, which has been interpreted as a segment of the Caribbean Large Igneous Province (CLIP) accreted during the Late Cretaceous‐Paleocene (Burke, ; Kerr et al, ; Sinton et al, ; Weber et al, ), is sutured to the continental margin along the RFS (Figure ) and is overlain by Upper Cretaceous‐Paleogene hemipelagic and terrigenous sediments (Bourgois et al, ; Moreno‐Sánchez & Pardo‐Trujillo, ; Pardo‐Trujillo et al, ).…”

“…West of the UFZ, the Panama Arc comprises an Upper Cretaceous‐Miocene intraoceanic arc that was also built over an 89–85 Ma oceanic plateau at the trailing edge of the Caribbean plate (Bourgois et al, ; Buchs et al, ; Wegner et al, ). This volcanic basement is overlain by Eocene‐Pliocene volcano‐clastic sequences, which make up the filling of the Atrato and Chucunaque‐Tuira basins (Buchs et al, ; Coates et al, ; Duque‐Caro, , ; Haffer, ), and may contain the tectono‐stratigraphic record of the pre‐ and postcollisional history.…”

“…Using magnetic studies he projects the suture eastward but not westward. Structural analysis by the Santa Elena peridotite, however, provides evidence for southward overthrusting Tournon, 1980, 1982;Bourgois, Azema, et al, 1982) onto the radiolarites of the Rio Potrero Grande window. Thus, the occurrence of ultramafic rock on Santa Elena Peninsula can apparently not be related to a simple uplift.…”

“…The Nicoya Complex (Dengo, 1962a) has been divided into two major stratigraphic units (de Boer, 1979;Kuijpers, 1980;Schmidt-Effing et al, 1981;Bourgois, Azema, et al, 1982). The lower stratigraphic unit has generally been interpreted as uplifted Lower-Upper Cretaceous oceanic crust (Galli, 1977;Kuijpers, 1980;Schmidt-Effing et al, 1981), which includes the Peridotites of the Santa Elena Peninsula (de Boer, 1979;Azema and Tournon, 1980;Bourgois, Azema, et al, 1982). The upper stratigraphic unit of the Nicoya Complex is not clearly defined, and its interpretation is controversial.…”
