Aggregation pheromone of the male granary weevil,Sitophilus granarius (L.)

Abstract: Evidence for a male-produced aggregation pheromone inSitophilus granarius is reported. Hexane extracts of Tenax®-trapped volatiles from males held on wheat were attractive to both sexes in a multiple-choice olfactometer and pitfall bioassay chamber. A quantitative relationship existed between days of insect exposure on disks and degree of responsiveness. The maximum response was to 35 insect-day-equivalents. Diel-related activity showed both sexes responsive during photophase and nonresponsive during scotophas… Show more

“…c a s t a n e u m and T. confusum were attracted to the synthetic aggregation pheromone. Aggregation to attractant pheromones has been reported for adults of other stored products Coleoptera (Abdel-Kader & Barak, 1979;Barak & Burkholder, 1977;Faustini et aL, 1982a;Khorramshahi & Burkholder, 1981) and larvae of Trogoderma glabrum (Herbst) respond to food attractants (Nara et aL, 1981;Nara & Burkholder, 1983). Our results suggest that larvae of T. castaneum will be attracted to adult male Tribolium producing aggregation pheromone.…”

“…4). The response by both sexes to pheromone was simihr to that reported in several other Coleoptera (ABDEL-KADER and BARAK 1979;KHORRAMSHAHI and BURKHOLDER 1981 ;FAUSTINI et al 1981FAUSTINI et al , 1982. This was characterized by leg extension, whipping antennae up and down, and zig-zag locomotion toward the pheromone source.…”
