Background Aggression towards nurses in the workplace arises from various reasons, reportedly increasing during the COVID-19 pandemic. Where aggression can be maintained by spiritual well-being, as it is said that spirituality is a coping skill and psychological well-being maintainer–but there is little known, especially during the pandemic. Thus, this study explored the effect of spirituality on aggression among the nurses working in the COVID-19 wards. Methods This cross-sectional data from 200 nurses involved in the COVID-19 patient treatment were collected using a random sampling method from four hospitals in East Mazandaran province, Iran. Responses were collected based on socio-demographics, Buss-Perry Aggression Questionnaire, and Paloutzian & Ellison Spiritual Well-being Scale. T-test, ANOVA, Pearson correlation coefficient, and multiple linear regression were applied for data analysis. Results The mean age of nurses was 31.49±6.88 (range: 21–48) years. Nurses working in the COVID-19 wards have a mean score of spiritual health of 67.21±12.84 (out of 120), whereas 51.77±10.96 (out of 116) was for aggression. The results showed a significant negative weak correlation between aggression and spiritual health (r = -.285, p<0.01). As per regression analysis, spiritual health [β = -.264], age [β = -.374], and working experience [β = 4.156] were the significant factors associated with aggression (p<0.05). Conclusions It is evident that nurses who consider spirituality in their life actions are in a state of reduced negative emotions, such as aggression. Thus, policymakers and managers of the healthcare settings are suggested to promote spirituality among the nurses through spiritual care education, providing the ground for promoting spirituality and a positive attitude towards it.

AbstractAim. The aim of the study was to analyze the assessment of issues related to the occurrence of spinal pain in professionally active nurses.Material and methods. The study group consisted of 145 nurses. The diagnostic survey method was used in the study using a questionnaire technique. The research tool was the original questionnaire (sociodemographic data and questions about opinions on the occurrence of spinal pain). The NRS scale was also used in the study.Results. The vast majority (99%, n=143) of respondents declared that they felt spinal pains. The largest group indicated that the most common location of pain was the lumbar spine (56.55%, n=82). It was shown that there is a statistically significant relationship between the use of sick leave and the intensity of the pain (χ2=24.101, p<0.05) and the subjective perception of the degree of disability (χ2=35.8300, p<0.05). A significant statistical relation between the place of work and the section of the spine most frequently affected by pain (χ2=12.719, p<0.05) was demonstrated.Conclusions. The work as a nurse contributes to the occurrence of spinal pain. There is a connection between the place of work and the occurrence of pain syndromes. Spinal pain contributed to absence from work. Seniority at work has an impact on the occurrence of spinal pain. Nursing staff has knowledge about spinal saving techniques. The occurrence of spinal pain syndromes affects the functioning in everyday life.

Unveiling the impact of siren noise exposure on cognitive function and mental health among firefighters

Firefighters reside in inherently noisy environments with sirens and emergency alarms. This noise can negatively affect the performance of firefighters and further pose a safety risk. This study investigates the relationship between siren noise exposure and its mental health disorders. In doing so, the study focuses on cognitive function among firefighters, using a Bayesian network model for the first time. This case-control study involved 92 firefighters and was conducted in 2023. Participants were categorized into case and control groups based on their exposure levels to siren noise. Noise exposures were initially measured according to ISO 9612 standards. The questionnaires covered demographic information, scales of their depression, anxiety, and stress, the Buss-Perry aggression questionnaire, and the cognitive failure questionnaire. GeNIe academic software version 2.3 was employed for Bayesian network analysis. The study results indicated a strong association that heightened siren noise exposure with a 100% probability increases depression (10%), stress (14%), anxiety (13%), and aggression (16%). In addition, each variable–noise exposure, depression, stress, anxiety, and aggression was linked to cognitive failure by 8%, 28%, 8%, and 13%, respectively. The combination of variables including noise exposure, depression, anxiety, and other mental health disorders had a 57% increase in cognitive failure. The most influence values were observed between depression and cognitive failures (0.564). The results of this study demonstrated the effect of siren noise exposure and its mental health disorders on cognitive function among firefighters. The results further highlight proper implementation of measures to mitigate these effects, and further required investigation on their effectiveness.
