What is it about the portrayal of violence in comedy programs that provides cues to viewers that television violence is trivial or even nonexistent in that type of show? In this study we develop and test four content-based explanations for this phenomenon. The findings suggest that the rate of violence (especially verbal forms) is very high on comedy programs, but that the rate is largely due to high numbers of acts among the relatively minor forms of violence. Also, the context of the portrayals trivializes the violence.

Gender differences in the representation of aggressors and victims are an important issue in the study of television violence in order to ascertain whether television contributes (and how) to reproduce or transform the traditional gender regime. Eighty-four hours of Spanish main TV broadcasting stations were randomly recorded during years 2000 and 2005. Variables related to the presentation of aggressors and victims and to the normative context of aggression were selected through content analysis. The results show the minimal presence of women in violent scenes. But women are also the victims of more serious violence. Paradoxically, women's aggressions appear to have more positive consequences and to be less legitimized. The implications of these findings are discussed from a gender studies perspective.

La regulación de, entre otros, los contenidos violentos en ciertos horarios se considera un medio para proteger a los menores de sus efectos. Sin embargo, es necesario analizar las características de la violencia para poder anticipar sus consecuencias. Este trabajo pretende analizar y comparar los actos de violencia emitidos en televisión española durante franjas horarias con diferente grado de protección a la infancia. Metodología. Para ello se llevó a cabo un análisis de contenido de 147 horas de grabación durante los años 2000, 2005 y 2012 de las principales cadenas nacionales y autonómicas. Resultados y discusión. Se encuentran resultados similares respecto a la frecuencia y las características de la violencia en los horarios analizados. Destaca que el 57% de la violencia mostrada en horario protegido se legitima o resulta ambigua en este sentido. Los menores siguen exponiéndose a la violencia a través de la televisión. Una regulación efectiva debiera considerar también aspectos como las consecuencias de la violencia y la legitimación que se hace de ella.
