Aggressive middle turbinate osteoblastoma with intracranial extension: a case report

Abstract: IntroductionOsteoblastoma is an uncommon benign bone tumor that accounts for 1 percent of all primary bone tumors. About 30 to 40 percent of all osteoblastoma cases involve the spine. Osteoblastoma involving the nasal cavity is rare, with only 11 reported cases in the English-language literature, while only four cases of turbinate osteoblastoma have been described.Case presentationWe report an unusual case of middle turbinate osteoblastoma associated with right-sided nasal obstruction and severe headache in a … Show more

“…Traditional approaches for excision are typically open approaches. [6][7][8][9] The efficacy of endoscopic and open techniques for excision of frontal sinus tumors remains an area of uncertainty given the paucity of data available. Some authors report that the endoscopic technique is insufficient for complete excision and opt for either a completely open or combined open approach, whereas others find endoscopic techniques to be appropriate.…”

“…[3][4][5] Complete excision is considered the most effective treatment, and a variety of approaches have been described, including endoscopic (eg, transnasal) and open (eg, trephine, osteoplastic flap, or craniotomy). [6][7][8][9] Here, we present a completely endoscopic multiportal resection of an extensive bilateral frontal sinus osteoblastoma and right orbital mucocele using a combined bilateral transorbital and transnasal approach. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first report of its kind utilizing a multiportal endoscopic skull base strategy in treatment of an extensive frontal sinus osteoblastoma with concomitant orbital mucocele.…”

“…To our knowledge, paranasal involvement is extremely rare with 13 cases reported in the English language literature, whereas only 4 cases of turbinate osteoblastoma have been reported. [ 3 ] Here we report 2 rare cases with osteoblastoma in the middle turbinate in an 18-year-old woman and a 57-year-old woman.…”
