“…If possible, emergency operation should be avoided and the run‐off be improved by preoperative thrombolysis. Previous investigators have reported good results from thrombolysis of PA, but in small series34–36. In this study run‐off was improved dramatically in most of the 100 treated legs.…”

“…3,20 Acute thrombosis of a popliteal aneurysm is associated with a complete lack of runoff, as demonstrated by means of our report and others. 2,11,16,17 Preoperative lysis proved to be highly efficient by clearing the complete vascular system, including the collaterals, from clot and restoring a one-or two-vessel runoff in most of the cases. 2,8,11,16,17 On the contrary, embolectomy as the only tool for clearing the runoff left a residual clot in the tibial arteries in 30% of the patients.…”

“…11 Since then, various studies demonstrated markedly improved outcomes, with a limb salvage rate as high as 100% with the combined treatment. 2,[4][5][6]8,[11][12][13][14][15][16][17] This retrospective study analyzed the impact of preoperative lytic therapy on angiographic and clinical outcomes in 13 consecutive patients with an acutely thrombosed popliteal aneurysm and compared the results with those in the literature.…”

“…Regional thrombolysis with the help of the heart-lung machine was performed in three cases. 10 Thrombolysis of thromboembolic complications due to popliteal aneurysm was followed by successful bypass operations in 11 cases. Diabetes mellitus was associated with a lesser degree of lysis (P ϭ .002).…”
