Aggressive undifferentiated colon carcinoma producing granulocyte-colony stimulating factor: Report of a case

Abstract: We report a rare case of granulocyte-colony stimulating factor (G-CSF)-producing undifferentiated carcinoma of the ascending colon. A 52-year-old Japanese man presented with a rapidly growing, aggressive abdominal tumor, and severe leukocytosis (63 000/mm(3)). The serum level of G-CSF was remarkably elevated to 640 pg/ml (normal, <18.1 pg/ml). The patient underwent palliative cytoreductive surgery for ascending colon carcinoma with lymph node and liver metastases. Histological examination revealed an undiffere… Show more

“…In contrast, clinical case reports of G‐CSF‐secreting cancers of colon and rectum describe patients presenting with large tumors and distal metastases . Despite surgical resection resulting in reduced G‐CSF plasma levels, the overall survival of these patients is poor implying oncogenic functions for G‐CSF . The aforementioned studies thus propose differential roles for GM‐CSF and G‐CSF in cancers of colon and rectum.…”

“…NECs mostly occur in the rectum, the caecum or the sigmoid colon 7,8,12 . At the time of diagnosis, the tumor usually has a diameter> 5 cm [13] and the disease is locally and systematically advanced [2,14]. Specifically, in 90% of cases, the stage of disease is Dukes' C & D 11 , while in 87% there is a presence of metastases already 8,15 , as in the current case.…”

“…In addition, the 5‐year overall survival rate of CRC patients whose tumors tested positive for GM‐CSF/GM‐CSFR has improved [ 146 ]. In contrast, patients with colon and rectal cancers accompanied by G‐CSF‐secretion have shown a high ratio of large tumors and distal metastases, and the overall survival of these patients is poor, suggesting oncogenic effects for G‐CSF [ 147 , 148 ].…”
