AgileDCN: An Agile Reconfigurable Optical Data Center Network Architecture

Abstract: This paper presents a detailed examination of a novel data center network (DCN) that can satisfy the high capacity and low latency requirements of modern cloud computing applications. This reconfigurable architecture called AgileDCN uses fastswitching optical components with a centralized control function and workload scheduler. By providing a highly flexible optical network fabric between server racks, very high network efficiencies can be achieved even under imbalanced loading patterns. Our simulation result… Show more

“…These optical signals beat together on the photodiode and produce an electrical signal containing electronic information, such as optical phase and intensity, on the required wavelength. Other wavelength signals may also produce electronic signals, but their frequencies are outside the range of the electrical filter, and are therefore filtered out [14]. By using coherent optical receivers, we can selectively receive signals corresponding to the configured wavelength.…”

“…Works on IM/DD transmissions at rates beyond 100 Gbaud [2], [4] demonstrate that it is feasible to obtain single lane data rates in excess of 200 Gbit/s. However, the transition towards a WDM implementation, in combination with some degree of optical switching (implemented using optical filters and multiplexers) [5]- [7], can result in a drastic variation in path loss present in individual server-to-server links in the DC. This in turn leads to different achievable link data rates, which can be accommodated by operating at a constant baud rate with different modulation formats.…”
