Aging-Related Findings of the Respiratory System in Chest Imaging: Pearls and Pitfalls

Abstract: Purpose of Review The purpose of this review is to describe the main features of the aging chest, studied through different imaging modalities. Recent Findings Aging-related changes of the respiratory system are inevitable. Therefore, it is mandatory to be familiar with the para-physiological changes that occurs, in order to avoid inappropriate interpretation of radiological findings that put patients at risk of over or undertreatment. “…31 Furthermore, the potential impact of uric acid on lung function can also be attributed to the effects of aging on both the structure and function of the lungs. [32][33][34] With advancing age, natural alterations occur in lung elasticity, muscle strength, and respiratory mechanics, which impact lung capacity and pulmonary function.…”

“…These procedures are expensive, invasive and can have significant complication risks. These can be pronounced in the elderly where para-physiological changes occur in the lungs which can lead to inappropriate interpretation of radiological findings that put patients at risk of over or under treatment as Baratella et al report [ 8 ]. Recent work demonstrates that core-needle biopsy performed under CT leads to accurate histological diagnosis of LC with high sensitivity and specificity [ 9 ].…”

“…The main curative treatment of non-small-cell lung cancer (NSCLC) relies on tumor resection [ 1 , 2 , 3 , 4 , 5 ]. Surgery is the preferred treatment for patients with stage I and II NSCLC and for patients with a non-centrally located resectable tumor in the absence of nodal metastasis on both computed tomography (CT) and positron emission tomography (PET) [ 1 ].…”
