Aging Studies of Vanadium Redox Flow Batteries

Abstract: A simple equivalent circuit based on a modified randles circuit has been developed and applied to assign different chemical and physical effects to a vanadium redox flow battery (VRFB) and the materials such as electrode, membrane and current collector. After that the test cell has been studied at different failure modes by electrochemical impedance spectroscopy. Some of the studied failure modes were corrosion of the current collectors due to electro-migration of sulphuric acid through graphite electrodes, hy… Show more

“…The in situ monitoring of the impedances of VRFBs has been performed to obtain information about changes in polarization resistance associated with electrode modification, degradation of materials, and optimization of the operating parameters, etc. [118][119][120][121][122][123][124][125][126][127][128]. The measurement of full cell impedance is performed by connecting the terminals of the signal analyzer to the terminals of the cell.…”

“…In the case of half-cell measurement, the terminals of the signal analyzer are connected to one of the cell terminals and to the reference electrode. Noack et al [125] conducted the EIS study to investigate the influence on impedance due to changes in the compression of the graphite felt, cell temperature, overcharging, membrane damage, etc.…”

“…A charge-discharge cell test was performed in a 40 cm 2 cell, which was assembled using a Fumasep FAP-450 anion exchange membrane (FuMa-Tech GmbH, Bietigheim-Bissingen, Germany) as a separator, GFA6 graphite felt (SGL Group, Meitingen, Germany) and FU 4369 graphite bipolar plates (Schunk Kohlenstofftechnik GmbH, Heuchelheim, Germany) were used as electrode and current collector materials, respectively (for details of the cell design, see Noack et al [27]). The felts were pre-treated for one hour at 400 • C in an oven before the cell assembly.…”
