Agreement between different recall periods in drug utilization studies

Abstract: ABSTRACT:Objective: To assess the agreement between three recall periods for self-reported drug use using a 24-hour recall period as reference. Methods: Participants were allocated into three groups with different recall periods of 7, 14 and 30 days and were interviewed at two different times. “…Several authors have presented evidence that the knowledge of pharmacotherapy is associated with compliance, and consequently, there is a higher change of therapeutic success. (31)(32)(33)(34)(35) No studies were found evaluating the level of knowledge of the Brazilian population about the drugs. In this case, we point out the importance of performing nationwide studies that evaluate the knowledge of the population about pharmacotherapy, in order to direct strategies and public policies, with a view to therapeutic success.…”

“…This study has a few limitations inherent to the method used, such as the memory recall bias, since the information obtained was self-reported by the survey participants. Moraes et al, (35) evaluated the agreement between a survey done at two instances in various groups, in which the difference was the time interval between the first and the second interview. In the group with the 14-day interval, it was noted that the Kappa value was 0.37 for occasional use of drugs, which fits into the classification of the drugs studied in this investigation.…”

“…Face‐to‐face administration has been pointed out as a good way to detect possible underestimation or overestimation of the patient's responses and to clarify questions (Edwards, ). In addition, recent drug abuse is more likely to be reported in face‐to‐face surveys (Pridemore, Damphousse & Moore, ), which have shown good agreement with pharmacy records of continuous‐use medication (Moraes, Mengue & Pizzol, ).…”
