“…The PCB concentrations in the present study were comparable to data from other fresh water bodies in Africa: the Nile River in Egypt (El-Kady et al, 2007), Ghar El Melh lagoon in Tunisia (Ameur et al, 2011), Pangani River basin in Tanzania (Hellar-Kihampa et al, 2013) and Congo River basin in the Democratic Republic of Congo (Verhaert et al, 2013). “…In our previous study, very high PCB levels were also found in water and sediment samples near the e-waste recycling workshops [13,21,24], thus confirming the above hypothesis. The levels of P DDTs in our study were at a similar level to those in fish collected in other countries in recent studies, such as the Mekong River Delta in Vietnam and the Sulejowski Reservoir in central Poland [6,25,26], whereas the level of P PCBs in our study were much higher than those in the above-mentioned studies. Comparisons of DDT and PCB concentrations between our study and other studies on non-e-waste recycling areas strongly verified the hypothesis that the PHC contaminant pattern in the studied e-waste region has been changed by the extensive recycling activities.…”
