Agronomic evaluation of perennial ryegrass wild populations from Ireland for use in French plant breeding programmes

Abstract: (Figs.

“…The advantage of single-plant characterization is that initial screening can be done with only a few seeds. Characterization of forage grasses through multivariate analysis methods has been used carried out by many authors (Hayward et al, 1982;Charmet et al, 1989;Oliveira and González, 2000). A similar method was used in the present study.…”

“…The scores for each accession were considered in the PCA as an alternative to the Smith-Hazel selection index, as recommended by Charmet et al (1989). In this study, the first PC was positively correlated with seasonal growth and negatively with colour.…”

“…The replicate and year effects were considered to be random. The accession effects were tested against the accession × year interaction, and when found to be significant, were used in further analyses (except for tolerance to foliar diseases and dry matter yields, in which the accession × year interaction was important and the data from each year were used) (Charmet et al 1989). Separation of means was performed by the least-significant difference (LSD) test.…”

“…The results of agronomic evaluation in France of a sample of this collection have been reported (Charmet et al ., 1989) and only a weak relationship between plant vigour and average July temperature was found . This study investigates the possible directional influence of microenvironmental conditions on population differentiation .…”
