Agronomic performance and economic profitability of lettuce fertilized with Calotropis procera as a green manure in a single crop

Abstract: Lettuce is a vegetable crop that requires a large supply of nutrients in a readily available form, within a short period of intense vegetative growth. The use of green manuring, with spontaneous species of the Caatinga biome, can quickly increase the organic matter content in the soil, providing nutrients for the crop. Therefore, the objective of this work was to evaluate the agron omic performance and economic profitability of lettuce fertilized with Calotropis procera in single crop under the semi-arid condi… Show more

“…The recommendation of the appropriate amount of biomass mixture of these two spontaneous species must be based on the knowledge obtained in experiments where the effects of different quantities of these green manures during different years on the production and the components of these vegetables were tested. The response obtained can be adjusted by various statistical models seeking to estimate the optimum amount of the mixture of these green manures (BEZERRA NETO et al, 2014;SILVA et al, 2018b). It is known, however, that adjustment of polynomial and exponential models in research with fertilizers is greatly affected by the model used, coefficient of variation, location of the maximum point, and clustering of experiments (ZIMMERMANN; CONAGIN, 1986).…”

“…The Silk flower (Calotropis procera (Aiton) W. T. Aiton) is an exotic species belonging to the Asclepiadaceae family, with high adaptability to semiarid conditions, where it is considered as biological invasive by some authors (FABRICANTE et al, 2013). It serves as a forage contribution to the herds (FERREIRA et al, 2015;ALMEIDA et al, 2017) and provides increased consumption and weight gain for animals (SILVA et al, 2010). Moreover, it is a plant that has high exploitation potential as green manure due to its high biomass production and the high concentrations of N, P, K in its tissues (SILVA et al, 2018;MEDEIROS et al, 2019).…”
