While the World Wide Web (WWW or Web) is steadily expanding, electronic books (eBooks) remain a niche market. In this article, it is first postulated that (1) specialized contents and device independence can make Web based eBooks compete with paper prints, and that (2) adaptive features that can be implemented by client-side computing are relevant for eBooks, while more complex forms of adaptation requiring server-side computations are not. Then, enhancements of the WWW standards (specifically of XML, XHTML, of the style-sheet languages CSS and XSL, and of the linking language XLink) are proposed for a better support of client-side adaptation and device independent content modeling are proposed. Finally, advanced browsing functionalities desirable for eBooks as well as their implementation in the WWW context are described.

Abstract:This paper introduces a Web-based guidance system which supports optimized presentations of sights or exhibited objects on different types of available stationary and mobile consumer devices, possibly running different operating systems. This is accomplished by adapting both the objects' content, as well as their presentation to the current usage context. Content thereby may be encoded in different presentation formats like video, audio, image, and marked-up text. The usage context embraces a set of properties describing the current usage environment of the guide. This includes, for example, the consumer device's capabilities, its current location, and the user's preferences. Both, the content adaptation and presentation services are based on standard Web technologies for increased interoperability. Finally, the guidance system is augmented with a Web-based content management and a statistics module, which enable for remote content administration and usage evaluations, respectively.

We present a proxy-based system for augmenting the capabilities of the World Wide Web. Our system adds two-way association links and automatically removes these links when they break, while the existing web features only one-way links and lingering broken links. Several web augmentation systems have been developed in the past that add two-way links. Our key contribution is in terms of link management, which in our system is dynamic and completely automatic. Links between web pages are added and removed according to popular web traversal paths, freeing both page owners and readers from the burden of link creation and maintenance. Links can form between pages that do not link to each other at all, reflecting the fact that readers have associated these pages with each other-we described such pages as entangled.We use variations on common peer-to-peer techniques to build a scalable system out of a dynamic set of proxy peers. Proxy-to-proxy communication takes place entirely over http, ensuring compatibility with existing infrastructures.A working implementation of our system is available at
