AIDS and sexual behavior reported by gay men in San Francisco.

Abstract: In November 1983, we surveyed 655 gay men in San Francisco regarding their sexual practices during the previous month and the same month one year ago. The sample was selected to include men in situations that would lead to high risk of sexual activities related to AIDS (acquired immune deficiency syndrome) transmission (i.e., men frequenting bathhouses and gay bars) as well as men in low-risk situations (those going to neither place and men in primary relationships). The Bath group showed little change in freq… Show more

“…This confirms data from numerous national, state, and local studies. 1,6,7,1214,[19][20][21][22] Previous studies have identified older persons, Blacks, Hispanics, and those with fewer than 12 years of education as being less knowledgeable about AIDS,1,6,8-14 a finding also supported by our study. Our report further demonstrates that the demographic determinants (i.e., age, race ethnicity, education) of knowledge and the misperception scores were the same within each AIDS incidence area as they were nationally.…”

“…In counterfactual experiments, we add spatial mixing by allowing agents to engage in sexual activities in neighboring locations. 28 This assumption has been relaxed in a recent contribution (Greenwood et al 2017), capturing observed behavioral responses in the United States (McKusick et al 1985). By contrast, Oster (2005) documents very few changes in sexual patterns over time in African countries.…”

“…[1][2][3][4][5] Recent studies suggest that fewer than 20 percent of gay men in New York City and under 10 percent of gay men in San Francisco have engaged in unprotected anal intercourse during the past 12 months.67 As a result, the prevalence of HIV infection among these populations has essentially reached a plateau, although at very high saturation levels. 8,9 Less is known about the risk behavior patterns of homosexual men in smaller cities where HIV infection prevalence is still relatively low.…”

“…Seventy-seven percent (N = 355) of male patrons Introduction A number of cohort studies provide evidence that gay men in large-city AIDS (acquired immunodeficiency syndrome) epicenters have substantially modified behavior patterns to reduce risk for HIV (human immunodeficiency virus) infection.
