Abstract: Purpose of review-There have been relatively few studies of HIV-related malignancies in Brazil. Universal access to antiretroviral drugs in Brazil has changed both the mortality and morbidity rates of AIDS. Nevertheless, there is also extreme poverty in both urban and rural areas and complications of prolonged immune suppression such as mycobacterial and malignant diseases have put a significant strain on the country's healthcare system. “…Several studies conducted by individual centers in the region have focused on AIDS-defining cancers (ADCs), mostly Kaposi sarcoma and non-Hodgkin lymphoma. [26][27][28][29][30][31] More recently, the Caribbean, Central and South America Network for HIV Research (CCASAnet) studied the frequency of malignancies in their HIV cohort; 82% were ADCs. The most frequent non-ADCs were Hodgkin lymphoma and skin cancers, which tended to occur in individuals who were older than those with ADCs and diagnosed more than 1 year after HIV diagnosis.…”

“…Regarding Hodgkin's lymphomas, some studies have hypothesized that the introduction of ART would be contrarily related to an increase in cases, since this group of lymphomas appears to be associated with more moderate degrees of immunodeficiency. [7,8] There are few studies on AIDS-associated neoplasms in Brazil [9] , and there has been no report on the profile of these patients with lymphoma and their outcome in Pernambuco.…”

“…Moreover, immunodeficiency in the presence of other risk factors is responsible for the increased risk of NADM, which since 2003 exceeds the annual numbers of AIDS defining cancers in US 7 . However, there have been few reports of cancer and HIV in Brazil 13,14,15,16 . Thus, the aim of this study was to report the prevalence of cancer and its associated factors among HIV-infected individuals attending an AIDS outpatient clinic in Vitória, State of Espírito Santo, Brazil.…”
