Ailanthone Inhibits Cell Proliferation in Tongue Squamous Cell Carcinoma via PI3K/AKT Pathway

Abstract: Tongue squamous cell carcinoma (TSCC) is the most widespread and invasive subtype of oral cancer with high recurrence rates. Ailanthone (AIL) is an active ingredient in the plant extracts of Ailanthus altissima (Mill.) Swingle. Here, we showed that AIL inhibited the proliferation of human TSCC, the cell viability of Cal-27 and Tca8113 was significantly decreased after AIL treatment for 24 h. Hoechst 33258 staining demonstrated apoptotic characteristics (such as chromatin aggregation) after AIL treatment. The r… Show more

“…Ailanthone (1 and 4 μM), a natural triterpenoid ingredient from Ailanthus altissima (Mill.) Swingle, resulted in cell cycle arrest at the G2/M phase and apoptosis in tongue squamous cell carcinoma Cal‐27 and TCA8113 cells following PI3K/Akt inhibition‐related downregulation of CDK1, cyclin B1 and Bcl‐2, accompanied by increased levels of cleaved caspase‐3, caspase‐9 and PARP‐1 (S. Wang et al, 2022). Emerging evidence has addressed the anticancer potential of Dillenia indica fruit extract in terms of attenuating cell colony number, induction of cell death, and inhibition of cell migration in SAS oral squamous cell carcinoma cells.…”
