“…5 Personal exposure to traffi c-related air pollution is a function of both ambient concentrations (a function of vehicle technology and other factors) and time activity patterns. [59][60][61][62][63] The IEA maintains a technical-economic database that includes detailed information on transport activity, vehicle activity, energy demand, and well-to-wheel greenhouse gas and pollutant emissions. 64 The IEA's Global Electric Vehicle Outlook report tracks sales of electric vehicles, and the International Council on Clean Transportation maintains a set of data tables, comparison charts, and a conversion tool for comparing passenger vehicle fuel standards.…”

“…It comes at great monetary and human cost: in the 83 largest urban areas of the United States alone, the amount of wasted time and fuel caused by congestion has been placed at US$ 60 billion (1). At the same time, the World Health Organization has estimated that over one million deaths per year worldwide can be attributed to outdoor air pollution (2), which is to a large part caused by vehicular traffic (3). Further adverse effects include fatalities through road accidents and economic losses from missed business activities.…”

“…Current studies have indicated that inhalation of ambient particulate matter (PM) ranks as the ninth cause of overall disease (21). Well-established evidence that exposure to air pollution is linked with heart failure, myocardial infarction, lung dysfunction, lung cancer, and increased morbidity (5,6,14,16,20,22,24,31) has caused a worldwide need for policy change. Further research regarding air pollution exposure in susceptible populations, including those with obesity, existing heart disease, cystic fibrosis, and more sensitive states is needed, particularly concerning exposure during development.…”
