Air Pollution Monitoring Changes to Accompany the Transition from a Control to a Systems Focus

Abstract: During the 20th century, air pollution control technologies grew at an amazingly rapid rate. Air quality in much of the industrialized world greatly improved as the efficiencies of these technologies improved. This continued improvement in pollution control has more recently been complemented with measures to prevent the emission of air pollutants. The previous, exclusive focus on treatment requires systems thinking. This review provides a framework for this Special Issue of Sustainability by describing the ne… Show more

“…A realistic simulation of pollutant dispersion is needed to properly assess the economic costs of atmospheric impact by the plant. Moreover, the availability of accurate and extended (both in time and space) pollutant concentration fields, having a suitable spatio-temporal resolution, reduces the uncertainty in estimates of population exposure to atmospheric pollution [9].…”

“…Over time, many researchers have investigated issues related to the compliance of companies with imposed pollution norms as well as the effects of inspections and controls carried out by national authorities [8,13,27,33,36,43,47]. Literature research usually looks at issues of a legal rather than economic nature [2,5,42].…”

“…Table 9 lists the results. We next calculate the relative distance from the sample point to the optimal sampling point according to Equation (12) and obtain the results as shown in Table 10. In addition, Table 10 also lists the rankings of C(air pollution) ordered by years.…”

“…Air pollution is mainly due to the air pollutant emissions [7][8][9], the rapid urban growth [10] and the shrinking green space [11]. Recently, a number of control technologies on air pollution have been proposed and developed [12]. One of the most important prerequisites of the effective prevention of air pollution lies in the evaluation of air pollution on socioeconomic development.…”
