Most water treatment facilities collect industrial wastewater in separated effluent pits. This discharge strategy has been proposed by several previous research as a solution to the problems of untreated wastewater being withdrawn further into open sea or rivers, which aims to prevent the pollution of water supplies. However, this solution might also have far-reaching ecological and environmental negative consequences. In this research we have assessed the effluent’s Physico-chemical characterization over the duration of one year, utilizing a specific statistical methodology for a water treatment plant located in Morocco that used effluent pits for retaining its wastewater. Effluents collected by the water treatment plant are tested in two effluent pits to determine the effects of the direct evaporation and storage, the results of this study reveal a significant increase in the Physico-chemical characteristics of these effluents kept inside effluent pits, which may be attributed to an uptick in water pollution in case of any accidental release or spill. Regression and correlation Explanatory variables from a statistical analysis have been assessed to determine which effluent variables were indeed strongly connected to each other. Effluent recycling is proposed to minimize the likelihood of environmental and ecological concerns.

Considering the utmost importance of adopting clean cooking fuels, especially from the viewpoint of partially realizing the targets of the 7th Sustainable Development Goal (SDG‐7), this study appraises how income inequality and other macroeconomic factors impact urban–rural disparities in clean cooking fuel accessibility across 40 developing countries from Sub‐Saharan Africa, Latin America, and the Caribbean. For analytical purposes, yearly data spanning from 2002 to 2018 is utilized for conducting advanced panel data examinations using methods that are robust against issues of cross‐sectional dependency, slope heterogeneity, and endogeneity. As a whole, the empirical findings reveal that deteriorating income inequality situations widen the gap between urban and rural clean cooking fuel access rates while good institutional quality accounts for lower disparities in urban–rural clean cooking fuel accessibility. Besides, region‐specific findings assure that this disparity is further enhanced by foreign remittances flowing into the selected Sub‐Saharan African nations while institutional quality improvement reduces disparity in the Latin America and the Caribbean countries of concern. Furthermore, the factors influencing the urban–rural disparities in clean cooking fuel accessibility are found to vary across different regional locations and national income‐based classifications of the sampled countries. Accordingly, considering the above findings, some region‐ and income‐group‐specific policy suggestions are put forward for enabling convergence between urban and rural clean fuel access rates across Sub‐Saharan Africa, Latin America, and the Caribbean.

All over the world, waste and its disposal are becoming a more prominent issue, as landfills swell up and growing evidence points to its contribution to climate change and environmental degradation. In the developing world, waste pickers sort through solid waste and sell it to vendors, who will recycle the product into something consumable. The work they do is vital to climate change mitigation, as well as urban cleanliness. In a way, waste pickers, especially in India, are vehicles of environmental justice, but they are often discriminated against and subjected to inhumane working conditions. In this environment, the pandemic hit, making waste pickers’ already precarious life even worse. This paper attempts to fill the gap in the academic literature by compiling a systemized literature review of the impacts of COVID-19 on waste-pickers’ lives using an environmental justice perspective. The review also uses a Feminist Political Ecology perspective to illuminate the double jeopardy that female waste pickers face in the era of COVID-19, which academia often ignores. Ultimately, this paper shows that COVID-19 exacerbated the preexisting injustices that the waste picker community face and created an immense burden on women. This paper will show that it is important to notice the differentiation between female and male waste picker challenges, especially at the crux of the COVID-19 pandemic. This paper has important policy implications as well as research considerations for both environmental justice and feminist political ecology scholars.
