This study presents the quantities of immission of the selected gas pollutions in the area of a compact development village. Within a range of a one-year research project (2012), the yearly average, seasonal and daily profiles of concentrations of the gas compounds in the air had been determined (SO2, NO2 and BTEX). Measures were executed in the area of a rural development and in the areas adjacent to the administrative village periphery. In the seasonal researches a passive method and a GC analytic technique had been used along with an automatic analyser to determine daily NO2 concentrations. It was found out that an air quality in a rural area is determined by the influence of the local sources (unstructured emission from domestic and farm buildings as well as a communication emission) and a toxicants' quantity, enriching environment, depends on cyclic weather states, characteristic for a moderate climate. It has been proved that the maximum concentrations of the tested compounds occur in the center of a village development. It has been proved that it was winter emission that influenced the value of a yearly average concentration of pollutions in the air in a most significant manner. Theory concerning parity of a natural and anthropogenic sources affecting the aerosanitary parameters of rural compact settlement area, has been questioned. It has been proposed to introduce an obligatory, temporary indicator monitoring of a compound, which might prove be a nitrogen dioxide.

The average (all campaigns) outdoor concentration of PM(2.5) (28.3 μg m(-3)) measured by the cascade impactors was higher than the indoor value (22.3 μg m(-3)) and the corresponding average from the nearest fixed site monitor (23.6 μg m(-3)). Indoor and outdoor PM(2.5) concentrations exceeded the WHO recommended 24-h limit in 42% and 49% of the days measured, respectively. The correlation coefficient (r) between corresponding outdoor and indoor aerosol sizes increased with decreasing aerodynamic diameter of the collected particles (r = 0.32-0.87), suggesting a higher infiltration rate of fine and quasi-ultrafine particles. Principal component analysis revealed five factors explaining more than 82% of the data variability. The first two factors reflected a close association between outdoor and indoor fine and quasi-ultrafine particles confirming the hypothesis of high infiltration rate of particles from outdoors. The third factor indicated that human activity is the main source of indoor emission of coarse particles. The fourth factor involved only outdoor variables showing the resuspension of coarse ambient aerosol on dry and warm days without its seeming effect on the indoor coarse PM levels. Having in mind that high concentrations of both fine and coarse aerosol were frequently observed in the studied space, our results suggest that indoor exercise in polluted urbanized areas may increase the overall exposure and thus represent a potential health risk to young individuals during physical education at schools.

On the necessity of an integrated, participative and adaptive approach to urban environmental quality in planning sustainable cities Key words: urban environmental quality; urban quality of life; sustainable urban development; trade-offs; quality dimensions. Rien van Stigt, Peter Driessen and Tejo Spit AbstractBased on a review of recent literature, this paper addresses the question of how urban planners can steer urban environmental quality, given the fact that it is multidimensional in character, is assessed largely in subjective terms and varies across time. A novel perspective of urban environmental quality is proposed, exploring three questions that are at the core of planning and designing cities: 'quality of what?', 'quality for whom?' and 'quality at what time?' The dilemmas that urban planners face in answering these questions are illustrated using secondary material. The three questions provide a framework that offers urban planners perspectives for action in finding their way out of the dilemmas identified. Rather than further detailing the exact nature of urban quality, this novel perspective calls for an approach to urban planning that is integrated, participative and adaptive.
