Air quality–related health damages of food

Abstract: Agriculture is a major contributor to air pollution, the largest environmental risk factor for mortality in the United States and worldwide. It is largely unknown, however, how individual foods or entire diets affect human health via poor air quality. We show how food production negatively impacts human health by increasing atmospheric fine particulate matter (PM2.5), and we identify ways to reduce these negative impacts of agriculture. We quantify the air quality–related health damages attributable to 95 agri… Show more

“…As such, our results should be considered the lower bound for total GHG and other environmental impacts. We also limit our focus to select environmental outcomes but note that interconnected outcomes related to food systems ( 13 , 14 ), human health ( 71 ), and the welfare of different groups of society ( 72 ) likely exist. For example, several assessments of the GHG implications of the RFS model a concomitant reduction in global food and feed consumption ( 13 , 19 ).…”

“…Interest in nutrient management improvements to address nutrient-related pollution is often tied to surface and groundwater quality (Howarth et al, 2002;Shortle and Horan, 2017) as well as airborne nutrient emissions such as NH 3 -N. These impacts are closely connected to health, economic, and social impacts on the affected communities (Dodds et al, 2009;Domingo et al, 2021). This discussion focuses on nutrient impacts on water quality.…”

“…Moreover, due to the loss in food conversion through animals, animal feed represents a net drain on the world's potential food supplies (Foley et al, 2011). Further, animal agriculture contributes significantly to other major issues, such as air pollution, climate change, water use, and eutrophication (Domingo et al, 2021;Poore and Nemecek, 2018;Springmann et al, 2018), as well as infectious diseases (Espinosa et al, 2020). All of these externalities may have indirect negative impacts on biodiversity.…”
