“…A study assessing Mn accumulation in children aged 7-12 years and living near a ferro-manganese alloy plant indicated toenail Mn as a biomarker of environmental exposure, associating the burden of this metal in exposed subjects with disrupting neurobehavior. Of note, in exposed children, the median Mn toenail concentration recorded in the cited study was about 5 times lower than the mean value (0.84 µg/g) observed in our study [50].…”

“…Toenail concentration of Mn has been frequently studied both in children [47][48][49][50] and in adults [40], with an LOD ranging from 0.001 [81] to 0.33 µg/g [66] and values usually below 10 µg/g [40]. The highest Mn toenail concentrations have been found in subjects living near a highly industrialized city in Pakistan (average value 52.1 µg/g) [82] and in highly polluted areas in Cambodia (average concentration 43.9 µg/g) [66].…”

“…Manganese ferroalloys are metal mixtures primarily composed of iron (Fe) in combination with manganese (Mn) and other metals such as chromium (Cr), lead (Pb), copper (Cu), nickel (Ni), zinc (Zn), cadmium (Cd), and aluminum (Al) (Olsen et al 2007). Most environmental epidemiology studies in communities living near ferromanganese industries have focused on Mn only, reporting associations with parkinsonism in adults and neurobehavioral decrements in children and the elderly, such as worse overall cognition, behavior, attention, learning and memory, olfactory function, and motor abilities (Bauer et al 2017;Chiu et al 2017;Haynes et al 2015;Lucchini et al 2007Lucchini et al , 2014Menezes-Filho et al 2014;Rodrigues et al 2018). Yet other metals in the ferroalloy mixture, such as Pb and Cu, are also known to be neurotoxic (Bulcke et al 2017;Caito and Aschner 2017).…”

“…Estos resultados servirán como punto de referencia para evaluar variaciones futuras en el contenido de Mn en la Ciudad de México. S cientific concern about the contamination due to manganese (Mn) has been raised because of its increasing presence in the environment, related to anthropogenic sources such as mining and smelting, 1 Mn alloy production, 2,3 welding, dry alkaline battery manufacturing, Mn salt production, ceramics, glass, aluminum cans and electronic components manufacture, 4 agrochemicals containing Mn such as fungicides and fertilizers, 5 as well as vehicle emissions. 6 The phasing out of lead compounds from gasoline has led to the use of other compounds that have antiknock characteristics, such as the methylcyclopentadienyl manganese tricarbonyl (MMT).…”
