Airway and Craniofacial Changes With Mandibular Advancement Device in Chinese With Obstructive Sleep Apnoea

Abstract: Introduction: The objective of this study was to investigate whether a reduction of obstructive sleep apnoea (OSA) severity is associated with significant airway and craniofacial changes with mandibular advancement device (MAD) in Chinese subjects. “…It seems surprising that mandibular advancement led to the increase in the nasopharyngeal region even without any maxillary intervention. A possible explanation for this could be related to the tension transmitted to the soft palate and posterior wall of the pharynx through the palatopharyngeal muscles [5,27]. However, changes in the nasopharyngeal area were minimal, potentially related to the dorsocranial anatomy limiting nasopharyngeal movement [12].…”
