Aiuminium tolerance of durum wheat germplasm

Abstract: Aluminium tolerance of Macedonian durum wheat (Triticum turgidum L. cony. durum (Desf.) MacKey) germplasm was evaluated in nutrient solutions containing 0, 74 or 148 pM of total Al . Relative root length (148 pM Al/0 Al) of various genotypes ranged from 41 to 72% (from moderately sensitive to moderately tolerant to Al) . No genotype with Al tolerance close to that of very tolerant T aestivum cultivar Atlas-66 was found. Seed Ca concentration was positively (r = 0 .64, P < 0 .05) and seed Fe concentration negat… Show more

“…1 and 2). This finding is in agreement with durum being generally less tolerant to ion deficiencies and toxicities compared with bread wheat (Cosic et al, 1994;Graham, 1995, 1996;Erenoglu et al, 1999;Khabaz-Saberi et al, 2000). However, some durum genotypes may have excellent tolerance to toxicity of Fe (Khabaz-Saberi et al, in preparation) and Al (Foy, 1996).…”

“…toxicity as the best bread wheat genotypes. Even though we tested only one durum genotype, it is interesting to note that durum wheat was previously reported to have lower tolerance to a range of ion deficiencies and toxicities compared with the bread wheat (Cosic et al 1994;Erenoglu et al 1999;Khabaz-Saberi et al 2000). In wheat, differential root uptake and/or translocation from roots to shoots could be potential exclusion mechanisms (inclusion avoidance).…”

“…, 2002). Although the genotypic variation in Al 3+ resistance among genotypes of T. aestivum is substantial, no resistance has been reported in any of its tetraploid or diploid progenitor species (Slootmaker, 1974; Berzonsky and Kimber, 1986; Cosic et al. , 1994).…”

“…, 1994). Indeed, T. turgidum (emmer and durum wheat) is noted for its sensitivity to Al 3+ stress (Cosic et al. , 1994), a characteristic that is likely to have restricted its wider distribution in agriculture.…”
