Serious games are not digital games that focus on entertainment and fun alone. On the other hand, serious games prioritise education that can increase interest and involvement among users, especially children in learning and teaching. Serious games can positively affect children by the impetus to transfer the knowledge and experience gained through games to real-world applications. Children development, especially at the preschool level, emphasises several essential elements for priority attention, including values and identity formation.Values and identity formation focus on inculcating an outstanding and well-established individual to be the backbone of a generation who can contribute and function well in society. The process of planning and developing a serious game featuring authentic values and identity formation learning content while maintaining entertainment and fun features is challenging. Thus, methodology and design guidelines are needed to help the game development team model a compelling game for the children. This paper addresses this challenge by planning and implementing a serious game framework to promote values and identity formation for children aged four to six. The results of this study are a serious game framework for values and identity formation of preschool children, based on the Cognitive Theory of Multimedia Learning principles. With a proper balance between game attributes and learning activities, the design of a serious game model includes game elements related to the readiness of preschool children to learn. The learning content applies the text that emulates the great values of the Prophet Muhammad peace and blessing upon him in nobly conducting daily life.

Advancing learners’ Islamic knowledge through a parenting education module

Parenting activities have been conducted in junior high schools in the city of Padang and the Solok Regency in West Sumatra, Indonesia, with the goal to increase the involvement of parents in educating teenagers in accordance with Islamic teachings. However, the material presented in the parenting activities has not been well planned nor arranged systematically. Therefore, it is necessary to develop Islamic-based parenting education modules that contain material on the subject of educating adolescents according to Islamic teachings. The valid and practical module presented in this study is teaching material developed by following the Plomp research and development model for parenting activities at school, as well as a reading material for the speakers and the parents. There are 12 sections developed from three scopes of Islamic-based parenting education material: the nature of humanity and education, the nature of Islamic teachings, and contemporary Islamic education studies about educating teenagers. The materials are presented in parenting activities held twice a semester, therefore, in three years, every section in the module would have been presented in parenting activities. It is hoped that this module can be used in junior high schools, especially for Muslim parents with teenagers.

The Abbasid caliphate was the longest reigning caliphate in the history of Islamic civilization. The reign of the Abbasid caliphate began in 132H but collapsed in 656H. The turbulent situation that has plagued the Abbasids has prompted some authors to produce literary works in various genres, both prose and poetry. Among them was Abdullah Ibn al-Muqaffa' who shifted his focus towards translating the Kalilah Wa Dimnah (KWD) book from Persian to Arabic. This effort is aimed at educating Abbasi leaders and communities by channeling moral values through the KWD book. This work is considered a masterpiece because it contains significant content based on moral values and guidance conveyed implicitly through the voices of animal characters. A total of five stories in the book of KWD was analyzed based on the moral values highlighted by Imam al-Ghazali. The eight aspects of these moral values are identified and classified based on four essential elements namely al-Hikmah (wisdom), al-Syaja'ah (courage), al-'Iffah (purity) and al-'Adlu (justice). The results of this study indicated that the author aligned al-Hikmah elements with the wisdom of setting strategies and the ability to trigger accurate thoughts. Meanwhile, Al-Syaja'ah elements were in line with the values of bravery in overpowering the enemy as well as inferiority. The al-'Iffah elements were in line with mutual aid values as opposed to maliciousness. The al-'Adlu element was next in line with unconditional love and generosity values. It can be concluded that these four elements contributed to translating the values contained in the KWD and in turn served as a guide to the general readership of leaders in exercising their responsibility to their communities in the pursuit of developing a harmonious society.
