Al/SiCNP and Al/SiCNP/X nanocomposites fabrication and properties: A review

Abstract: Global requirement for minimum cost, high efficiency, and good grade materials has made a diversion in research from base alloys to composite materials, since the last five decades. In the case of metal matrix composites, aluminium metal matrix composites have been certified and steadily advanced due to properties such as high strength, low density, and high wear resistance. They are widely used in automobile industry, aircraft industry, structural applications, and many other defence systems. Researchers have… Show more

“…The reinforcement particles distribution in the metal matrix and grain refinement depended on the ultrasonic intensity. Wettability and interface bonding between nano-sized SiCp reinforcement and matrix material were good in the ultrasonic assisted casting method [30]. Ultrasonic apparatus was equipped with maximum output frequency of 20 kHz and maximum power of 2.4 kW.…”

“…The novel applications of aluminium matrix composites in various areas are presented in Figure 14. In order to improve the tribological and mechanical characteristics of AMCs, the frequently used reinforcements are alumina (Al2O3) [90], silicon carbide (SiC) [91,92], boron carbide (B4C) [93], titanium carbide (TiC) [94], graphite (Gr) [95], and carbon nanotubes (CNTs) [96]. Greater stiffness and strength, enhanced characteristics at elevated temperatures, lightweight, increased electrical conductivity, controlled coefficient of thermal expansion, enhanced abrasion and wear resistance are the advantages of composite materials J o u r n a l P r e -p r o o f 20 consisting of aluminium matrices when compared with traditional aluminium alloys [97,98].…”

“…With the combined advantages of aluminum matrix materials and SiC reinforcement, SiC p /Al MMCs have been certified and are steadily advancing owing to their excellent properties such as high strength, low density, and high wear resistance. They are widely used in the automobile and aircraft industries, structural applications, and many other systems [5]. Since SiC p /Al composites consist of a metal matrix and a SiC reinforcement, different volume or weight percentage SiC in the matrix materials forms different SiC p /Al composites, e.g., 10% (mass fraction), 20% (volume fraction), 45% (mass fraction) and 65% (volume fraction) SiC p /Al matrix composites.…”
