Materials based on the Al 2 O 3 -ZrO 2 -Yb 2 O 3 system are promising for producing protective coatings and structural ceramics by the oriented crystallization of eutectics. The elements of the Al 2 O 3 -ZrO 2 -Yb 2 O 3 phase diagram are examined in [1-3]. Data on bounding binary systems are taken from [4-15]. The objective of this paper is to construct vertical sections of the Al 2 O 3 -ZrO 2 -Yb 2 O 3 phase diagram for its more complete presentation over a wide range of temperatures and concentrations. For this purpose, three sections were selected to most completely show interactions in the system: bisector Yb 2 O 3 -(50%* Al 2 O 3 ⋅ 50% ZrO 2 ) or Yb 2 O 3 -(A/Z = 1), bisector ZrO 2 -(50% Al 2 O 3 ⋅ 50% Yb 2 O 3 ) or ZrO 2 -(A/Yb = 1), and isopleth 15% ZrO 2 (15Z). Table 1 summarizes the compositions of test alloys, sequence of crystallized phases in these alloys, and liquidus and solidus temperatures. The initial substances and experimental procedures are described in [1]. The vertical sections were constructed using experimental data on the phase composition of samples cast and annealed at subsolidus temperatures, isothermal sections at 1250 and 1650°C, liquidus and solidus surfaces, and a reaction scheme for equilibrium crystallization of alloys in the Al 2 O 3 -ZrO 2 -Yb 2 O 3 system [1-3].* The concentration is in mole%.
