Alarming occurrence of Fusarium wilt disease in pea (Pisum sativum L.) cultivations of Jabalpur district in Central India revealed by an array of pathogenicity tests

Abstract: A survey of pea cultivations in Jabalpur district of India revealed predominance of Fusarium diseases in this region. This was confirmed by an array of pathogenicity tests involving pathogen spores and metabolites. Fusarium oxysporum FP-02/G [NFCCI-2195] isolated from Ghana village of Jabalpur district was found to show severe pathogenicity on pea varieties commonly grown in Jabalpur.

“…Spore suspensions were then aseptically filtered through a 100 μm nylon mesh to remove mycelial debris. Inhibition of infection of the seeds by F. verticillioides was studied and evaluated on an 18 point scale using a modification of the method described by Sharma (2011) . The criteria for assignment of scores were as follows: (a) no germination and coat infection – zero point, (b) germinated seed showing coat and radical tip infection – one point, (c) either infected – two points, (d) healthy seed showing germination – three points.…”

“…The external symptoms characteristic of Fusarium wilt disease includes vein clearing, leaf epinasty, wilting, chlorosis, necrosis, and abscission leading to complete plant wilting and death (MacHardy and Beckman, 1983). In view of this, the disease incidence in the present study was evaluated in terms of symptomatic leaf infections (Sharma, 2011).…”

“…Pea seeds grown in Wielkopolska and Kujawy were less infected by pathogens (Table 3 and 4). Sharma (2011) reported the presence of Fusarium fungi in seeds in a blotter test. Fusarium fungi were identified on 12.9% of seeds on average.…”
