Alcohol and gastrointestinal oncology

Abstract: Results from several large epidemiological studies have firmly established that alcohol is associated with elevated cancer incidence and mortality. Recently the International Agency for Cancer Research stated that acetaldehyde associated with alcoholic beverages is carcinogenic to humans and confirmed the Group 1 classification of alcohol consumption and of ethanol in alcoholic beve rages. Alcohol consumption causes cancers of the oral cavity, pharynx, larynx, oesophagus, colorectum, liver, pancreas and female… Show more

“…Some of these compounds are also very poisonous e.g. ethyl carbamate and some are even carcinogenic (Lachenmeier et al 2009 , 2011 ; Testino et al 2014 ; Testino and Borro 2010 ). Annan et al ( 2003 ) listed 64 volatile compounds produced during the mixed culture fermentation of Ghanaian maize dough consisting of 20 alcohols, 22 carbonyls, 11 esters, 7 acids, 3 phenolic compounds and a furan.…”

“…As regard to cancers, alcohol consumption has been identified as carcinogenic for the following cancer categories: cancer of the mouth, nasopharrynx, other pharynx and oropharynx, laryngeal cancer, oesophageal cancer, colon and rectum cancer, liver cancer and female breast cancer. In addition, alcohol consumption was considered to be a likely cause of pancreatic cancer too [16,17,29,30,36,37]. The higher the consumption, the greater the risk for these cancers [16–18,36,37].…”

“…The carcinogenic effects of alcohol are possibly mediated through different pathways; e.g., formation of acetaldehyde, induction of cytochrome P450 2E1 (CYP2E1activation of various procarcinogens), nutritional deficiencies, alterations of immunity, weight gain (obesity), increase in estrogen levels, etc. [19][20][21]. Interestingly, there is a strong synergism between alcohol consumption and hepatitis C virus (HCV) in liver pathology [22].…”
