Alcohol intake in a healthy elderly population.

Abstract: Abstract:The relationship between amount of alcohol consumption and social, psychological, and cognitive status was examined in 270 healthy, independently living men and women over age 65. “…A majority of this population (52% of older adults above age 55) continue to consume alcoholic beverages in social settings (Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration, 2008). Thus, established drinking patterns may continue into later years because of longer life expectancies that encourage older adults to remain socially active (Adams et al, 1990;Goodwin et al, 1987;.…”

“…Risk-full use seems to be associated with worse cognitive function (Geroldi et al, 1994) and moderate use with better cognitive function (Goodwin et al, 1987;Lang et al, 2007;Rodgers et al, 2005). There are indications that the relationship is actually spurious, as the relation disappears when controlling for other potential influences (Cooper et al, 2009;Goodwin et al, 1987).…”

“…Changing lifestyle trends may provide more opportunities for older adults to drink socially even though the self-reported average alcohol quantity decreases with age (Adams et al, 1990;Goodwin et al, 1987;Zucker, 1998). However, despite this trend, there remains a paucity of literature concerning alcohol and placebo effects on cognitive and behavioral measures, particularly using moderate doses, in older adults (see Gilbertson et al, 2009;Vogel-Sprott and Barrett, 1984).…”
