“…It is argued that, in these horizontal collectivist cultures, parental imposition and strictness might be negatively perceived by children. The results of the study are in line with some previous studies that have shown that the indulgent style (i.e., warmth without strictness) provides important benefits in terms of psychosocial adjustment for adolescents, including greater school adjustment [106] and optimal learning strategies [97], psychosocial development [95] or environmental empathy and connectedness with nature [84], and protection against alcohol use and abuse [61], marijuana and tobacco [95], personal maladjustment [65] or traditional bullying and cyberbullying victimization [27].…”

“…The sample frame of the present study were adolescents from secondary schools in large metropolitan areas (with over one million inhabitants in each area) on the East Coast of Spain, Middle Coast of Portugal, and in Southeast Brazil. The data was collected from 34 educational centers (11 Spanish,13 Portuguese, and 10 Brazilian) selected through a simple random sampling method from a complete list of centers [19,26,27,61,62]. In the samples of the three countries, we selected adolescents from middle class neighborhoods who: (a) lived in two-parent nuclear families, mother or primary female caregiver and father or primary male caregiver; and (b) whose parents and four grandparents were born in the country of each sample (Spain, Portugal and Brazil).…”

“…In line with our findings, our study expresses the importance of the role of parents [54][55][56]. Depending on their parenting style, children can have differing outcomes in mental health when they are growing up [57,58]. Our study aimed to investigate the connection between parental drinking frequency and their children's level of stress.…”

“…On the other hand, findings from emergent research in European and Latin American countries have also pointed out that the indulgent parenting style (warmth but non-strictness) provides equal or even better benefits than the authoritative parenting style (warmth and strictness) (Calafat et al, 2014;García & Gracia, 2009Di Maggio & Zappulla, 2014;Martinez & Garcia, 2007Rodrigues, Veiga, Fuentes, & Garcia, 2013;Valente et al, 2017). Adolescents from indulgent families had the same or better scores on outcomes such as self-esteem (Fuentes, Garcia, Gracia, & Alarcon, 2015;Garcia, Serra, Zacares, & Garcia, 2018;Riquelme, Garcia, & Serra, 2018;Rodrigues et al, 2013) and psychological health adjustment (Calafat et al, 2014;García & Gracia, 2009Garcia, Serra, Zacares, Calafat, & Garcia, 2019). In addition, indulgent parenting provides benefits against deviance.…”
