Aldehyde dehydrogenase isoform 1 (ALDH1) expression as a predictor of radiosensitivity in laryngeal cancer

Abstract: The patients in this study with ALDH1 + tumours had better outcomes than their counterparts with ALDH1- tumours. This finding suggests that not all CSCs are resistant to conventional cancer treatments. It may also imply that new methods of correctly identifying these cells are needed.

“…However, our analysis did not show significant impact of ALDH1 expression on disease stage. The discrepancy of the results may be due to the recent publications [ 33 , 35 , 36 ] enrolled in the dataset which have shown no significant correlations between lymph node metastasis and CSC. Although a significant correlation of ALDH1 CSC with nodal status was not concluded in this meta-analysis, in patterns of primary tumor and its corresponding nodal metastases, we (Qian et al .)…”

“…It is ubiquitously distributed in various tumors, including BC, nonsmall-cell lung cancer, laryngeal cancer, ovarian cancer, and gastric cancer. [48] Many studies showed that ALDH1 is a marker of BCSCs, [3,5,9,10] while Kunju et al [11] reported that ALDH1-positive benign breast epithelial cells may predict an increased risk for the development of BC. Several studies suggested that ALDH1 is associated with an aggressive phenotype and poor prognosis, [1216] although others found that it was not a survival predictor of BC [1719] ; another study reported that expression of the major ALDH1 isoenzyme ALDH1A1 predicted a better outcome in BC of the triple-negative subtype.…”

“…However, in a very recent study, the relapse rate in patients who underwent curative-intent radiotherapy or chemo-radiotherapy was lower in those with ALDH1 positive tumors [64]. These two studies providing conflicting data about the biomarker potential of ALDH1 for laryngeal CSCs necessitates further investigations to make certain of its potential as a CSCs biomarker.…”
