Alea – Complex Job Scheduling Simulator

Abstract: Using large computer systems such as HPC clusters up to their full potential can be hard. Many problems and inefficiencies relate to the interactions of user workloads and system-level policies. These policies enable various setup choices of the resource management system (RMS) as well as the applied scheduling policy. While expert's assessment and well known best practices do their job when tuning the performance, there is usually plenty of room for further improvements, e.g., by considering more efficient sy… Show more

“…The cluster consists of 184 nodes, with a total of 1,664 processors. We run simulations with the workload using a job scheduling simulator, called Alea [30], which is based on the GridSim toolkit [31]. Since no urgent jobs are defined in the workload, we randomly inject an urgent job at busy times in different simulated months.…”

“…The Alea [50] is a simulator that emulates scheduling in parallel HPC clusters based on the newest GridSim (GridSim v5.0) toolkit. It inherits the features of the GridSim simulator, making the job scheduling and mapping challenges on HPCs easier to set and run.…”

“…To assess the impact of these modications on the overall utilization and the waiting times experienced by jobs, we implemented a simulator using the Alea job scheduling simulator [1,10] which is based on the GridSim toolkit [13]. Alea allows for detailed simulations, supports several mainstream scheduling algorithms (e.g., FCFS, variants of Backlling, Fair-Share) and commonly used system restrictions such as queue limits and quotas.…”
