Alexithymia and Emotional Processing: A Mediation Model

Abstract: Emotional awareness and emotional differentiation mediate the relationship between alexithymia and emotion regulation. The similarities between samples suggest that emotional processing may be better thought of as being on a continuum. Being aware of the differential effect each alexithymia factor has on emotional processing may be helpful to guide intervention.

We have conducted a study (Silva, Vasco, & Watson, 2017 ) that attempted to investigate the associations among alexithymia, emotional awareness, emotional differentiation and emotion regulation in order to identify better ways to assist alexithymic patients in psychotherapy. Structural equation modeling (SEM) was used to test a mediation model in clinical and non-clinical samples.…”

“…Accordingly, creating positive emotions in athletes should be effective for the prevention or reduction of burnout (Gustafsson et al, 2015). However, difficulty with emotional awareness and discernment mediates the relationship between alexithymic tendencies and emotional control (Silva et al, 2017). People with these characteristics are prone to behaviors that are influenced by the external environment and stimuli, leading to over-adaptation (Nemiah, 1978).…”
