Alexithymic Characteristics and Patient-Therapist Interaction: A Video Analysis of Facial Affect Display

Abstract: Alexithymia as a disorder of affect regulation entails a patient’s reduced ability to process emotional information. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the impact of alexithymia [as measured by the Toronto Alexithymia Scale (TAS)-26, German version] on affective correlates in a dyadic therapeutic interaction (as recorded by the Emotional Facial Action Coding System). Interviews with 12 in-patients with various psychosomatic disorders (anxiety, depression, somatisation) were videotaped and evaluated for … Show more

“…This clearly limits the generalization of our results to emotional processing. At least, one could associate the fi nding of a facilitated inhibitory activity in the motor system with a reduced motor activity in facial expression and gesture and melody of speech that is frequently observed in alexithymic subjects and was empirically confi rmed [34,35] . However, inhibitory and excitatory networks are basic components of the brain which also regulate and process emotional-cognitive functions.…”

“…As such it has been observed that alexithymic patients have a tendency to avoid confl ict and to approach others in an unempathic, cold or detached way [1,[5][6][7][8] . These patients avoid close social relations, and when they do relate to others, they tend to position themselves as dependent or as impersonal such that the relation becomes superfi cial [1,5,9] .…”
