Alfa fiber-polyurethane composite as a thermal and acoustic insulation material for building applications

Abstract: The aim of the present work pointed out the introduction of natural alkalised alpha fibres as reinforcement in the preparation of partially biodegradable green insulation material composite. Thermal conductivity, mechanical properties and acoustical performances of composites were investigated as a function of fibre content. We found that 10% of alkali solution improve the hydrophobic character, mechanical and interfacial properties of the fibers. Composites made of alfa fibers-polyurethane resin has exhibited… Show more

“…Another study on alpha fiber-reinforced polyurethane composite reported that 10% of alkali treatment for 5 hours improved its water absorption, mechanical and interfacial properties. It's acoustic property revealed that alkali-treated alfa fibers reinforced polyurethane composite exhibited better sound absorption coefficient and was directly proportional to increase in fiber percentage, which is due to increase in the interconnections of enlarged cell wall structure of fibers with respect to increase in fiber content [11]. Sumesh et al investigated the influence of alkali treated sisal/coir reinforcements on epoxy composites and found NaOH treated fibers enhanced the mechanical properties [12].…”

“…Using these results, the best-fit coefficients for reasonable prediction of the sound-absorption performance by means of simple empirical formulae are reported. Although some authors have recently explored the inclusion of esparto in biocomposites [41] and reported measurements of its sound-absorbing performance [42], to the best of the authors' knowledge, a sound absorption empirical prediction model for this kind of fiber has not been previously presented.…”

“…Natural waste have been widely used due to their inherent properties such as bio-degradability, renewability and their abundant availability, in addition to their light weight, carbon neutral and cost competitiveness. (Thyavihalli Girijappa et al 2019) , (Guna et al 2019) It was reported that the natural brous materials compete with synthetic materials with effective sound absorbing behaviour viz., barley straw, (Liuzzi et al 2020) ux, (Sair et al 2019) cotton, (He et al 2018) saw dust, (Bansod et al 2016) rice husk, (Taban et al 2019) hemp, (Liao et al 2020) palm, (Mohammed et al 2018) , (Belakroum et al 2017) kenaf, (Ismail et al 2019) corn, (Sari et al 2017) , (Binici et al 2016) paddy, (Marques et al 2020) sisal, (Tholkappiyana et al 2015) banana, (Singh and Mukhopadhyay 2020) and cork. (Trematerra and Lombardi 2017) Further, natural ber reinforced polymer composites have also received a lot of attention due to their lightweight, bio-degradable nature, eco-friendly nature.…”
