Algae-Derived Marine Oligosaccharides and Their Biological Applications

Abstract: The biological relevance of algae-derived marine oligosaccharides has potential significance in numerous applications of industrial biotechnology. Marine oligosaccharides are produced in algae naturally and/or by hydrolysis of derived polysaccharides. The potential of marine oligosaccharides is still unexplored, and these molecules, including their derivatives, are a versatile source of chemical diversity. In-depth knowledge on such molecules will provide novel insights, thus depicting their role in discoverin… Show more

“…Physical-chemical properties and biological activities of their derivatives are of great interest for study. Previous works showed they have the potential to be used as bioactive molecules and functional materials in food, pharmaceutical, and cosmetic industries [3][4][5]. Among seaweed polysaccharides, agar and carrageenan are valuable sources of various oligosaccharides with beneficial effects for human health, and these effects depend on the degree of depolymerization [6].…”

“…Especially, alginate and its derived isolated from marine source have been shown to notably diverse pharmacological activities [4]. In fact, alginates are used in wound healing [1], to stimulate the immune system, and promote the potential for anti-obesity through weight reduction [3,5]. In addition, the reduction of glycemic index through reduced intestinal absorption also increases satiety.…”

“…The global marine algae population has been known as the growing importance sector in industrial food-related production, which plays a major role in providing protein, polysaccharides, and biomaterials for the increasing demand of human health, especially for pharmaceutical application. It is responsible for approximately 40 -50 % of the photosynthesis each year that occurs on earth [3]. According to Rodriguez-Jasso et al (2011), brown algae are the second most abundant group comprising about 2,000 species [4].…”
