Quenlig is a web application where users answer textually, generic to any kind of questionnaires, and designed as a formative assessment tool. Students can learn their courses, test their knowledge, exercise themselves and get ranked. It allows teachers to automatize examinations and practice lessons (giving context dependent advice when needed), dynamically monitor students progression and transparently verify if they cheat. The system returns statistics to improve the course quality and ensure a good knowledge acquisition. Examinations analysis show that its use in a low variance text based answer context improves knowledge acquisition.

Automated assessment systems are increasingly used in higher education programming courses since the manual assessment of programming assignments is very time-consuming. Although a substantial amount of research work has been done on systems for the automatic assessment of programming assignments, most studies are focused on technical characteristics and further research is needed for examining the effect of using these systems on students’ perceptions and performance. This paper examines the effect of using an instructor-centered tool for automatically assessing programming assignments on students’ perceptions and performance in a web development course at a higher education institution. A total of three data sources were used: a survey to collect data regarding students’ perceptions, and the grades of the student assignment submissions and of a practical programming exam in order to analyze the students’ performance. The results show that the incorporation of the automated assessment tool into the course was beneficial for the students, since it allowed for increasing their motivation, improving the quality of their works, and enhancing their practical programming skills. Nonetheless, a significant percentage of students found the feedback that was generated by the tool hard to understand and of little use, and the generated grades unfair.

In any learning systems and especially automated assessment tools, the most common task is to evaluate the students' performance using training exercise. The selection of the next exercise is generally performed as a static set of exercises or free by students. But, it would clearly be advantageous if this exercise selection process were to be automated based on their previous performances. Therefore, the focus of this paper is the development of a method capable of determining exercise progression and sequencing during a training session based on the students' past performance. A dynamic planning of algorithmic exercises was developed based on a semantic and pedagogical description to be used in training exercise.
