Algorithms for multiaxial cycle counting method and fatigue life prediction based on the weight function critical plane under random loading

Abstract: Based on the critical plane determined by the weight function method, two algorithms for multiaxial cycle counting method are proposed by modifying the rainflow and range cycle counting methods. The proposed two algorithms can be applied to multiaxial random loading, and be suitable to any critical plane-based fatigue life prediction models, since the counted cycles or reversals are represented by the start time and end time. The proposed two algorithms are used to predict multiaxial fatigue life by the experi… Show more

“…Cycle counting is one of several fatigue-damage evaluation methods. The full procedure generally includes three main steps: cycle counting, damage evaluation in each cycle, and damage accumulation assessment (Chen and Shang, 2011; Wang et al., 2019). However, traditional cycle counting algorithms, such as peak counting, level crossing, range-pair counting, and rainflow counting (ASTM E1457-15, 2015; Downing and Socie, 1982; Rychlik, 1987), are not applicable online because they reconstruct the load spectrum to form as large a cycle or half-cycle as possible.…”

“…Therefore, in such cases, the effect of mean stress on fatigue lifetime under random loading should not be ignored (Barbosa et al, 2020). So also, Wang et al (2019) have proposed two algorithms for multiaxial cycle counting method by modifying the rainflow and range cycle counting methods, for predict multiaxial fatigue life in both high-cycle and low-cycle fatigue region. Barbosa et al (2019) suggested probabilistic S-N fields based on statistical distributions applied to metallic and composite materials using various fatigue models.…”
