Alice

Abstract: We present lessons learned from developing Alice, a 3D graphics programming environment designed for undergraduates with no 3D graphics or programming experience. Alice is a Windows 95/NT tool for describing the time-based and interactive behavior of 3D objects, not a CAD tool for creating object geometry. Our observations and conclusions come from formal and informal observations of hundreds of users. Primary results include the use of LOGOstyle egocentric coordinate systems, the use of arbitrary objects as l… Show more

“…Three of the most popular visual programming environments currently used in schools and extracurricular programs are Alice [8]; Scratch [9], [10]; and LEGO MINDSTORMS NXT-G [11]. These languages, as well as the Visual Programmer, all permit the completion of a similar task: programming behaviors of virtual or robotic characters through a graphical programming environment.…”

“…The Phidget toolkit [19] was aimed at making tangible devices available to designers. Alice [9] was focused on lowering the threshold of entry into the world of 3D graphics and VR programming. The Designer's Outpost project found that web designers often used pens, paper, walls, and tables during the early phases of design [22].…”
