Alignment of Competencies to Address Inefficiencies in Medicines Development and Clinical Research: Need for Inter-Professional Education

Abstract: The challenges faced by the biopharmaceutical industry in its key role to overcome the bottlenecks in innovative medicines development are related to addressing the technical knowledge gaps, the limitations to clinical trial testing, and the lack of clarity in the global pathways and processes to efficient outcomes. It is postulated that the lack of an adequately sized and appropriately trained multi-professional workforce, both in the industry and in the clinical research field, to enable fulfillment of the d… Show more

“…In addition, core competencies for clinical and translational PIs were featured on the CTSA Web site [ 15 ] and formed the basis for curriculum development for master-level courses under the CTSA, beginning with the K-30 awards. The role of pharmaceutical physicians, which is primarily a role found in Europe and South America, have also resulted in an evolved core competency framework [ 16 ].…”

“…Therefore, a thorough revisiting of the models of research and development as well as new comprehensive partnerships between and across stakeholders involved in the process of drug development and access to treatments are needed. Addressing inefficiencies and increasing the value of patient-centred drug development need multidisciplinary and inter-professional cross-fertilisation based on new education principles [4] as well as political support.…”

“…Subsequently, the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP) agreed to utilize the JTF Framework as the basis for formal academic program accreditation and supported the formation of the Committee on Accreditation of Academic Programs in Clinical Research (CAAPCR) ( Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Programs, 2012 ; Sonstein and Jones, 2018 ). In tandem with these educational initiatives, IFAPP further developed KSAs of core competencies and proposed the alignment of those to educational content for pharmaceutical physicians, among others involved in medicine development ( Silva et al, 2015 ; Stonier et al, 2020 ).…”
